About kapur wood

Kapur, botanical name Dyrobalanops spp. is a wood from Southeast Asia. Kapur, famous for its high durability, is a hardwood used for outdoor applications. Kapur has a relatively wide range of uses. It is wood used in outdoor joinery, especially for terraces, door and window sills and floorboards, because it is resistant to rot when exposed to the weather. It is increasingly used as a substitute for Bangkirai. Kapur is initially reddish brown to orange and darkens quickly to brown under UV light. Our Kapur comes from the tropical rainforests of the lowlands of Indonesia. The trees can reach a height of 60 m with a diameter of 80 to 100 cm. Well-shaped struts support their straight, cylindrical shaft and the trunk is without branches up to a height of 30 m, which explains their homogeneity. When freshly cut, the wood gives off the smell of camphor, which disappears when dried.

Color and weathering

Redish brown with different shades. The color differences between the individual pieces of floorboards are natural and usual. The wood darkens in the air and changes color to gray-silver over time. The time of graying depends on the method of treatment, the location of the climate, the exposure of individual pieces to rain and other weather conditions.

Natural oil content

Kapur wood contains a natural dye that can leach out of the wood for some time, for example due to rain, in the form of a brown liquid. Therefore, avoid contact with plasters, bricks and other coverings or floors that could be colored. Drain rainwater through a pipe system or sewer, if the installation is carried out on floors or balconies. Use only special high-strength stainless steel screws for mounting. Avoid contact of wood with iron objects that create blue-black stains, as well as substances and objects that cause corrosion. Over time, this tree will show a change in the color of the gray shade due to UV sunlight. This phenomenon manifests itself equally in all tree species. If you want to restore the original color of the wood, use a professional Saicos dehumidifier (new window) according to the technical sheet. Then treat with a suitable protective oil paint.

Properties

Kapur wood offers a good stability and volume changes of wood with a high risk to cracking. Furthermore, the wood shows a medium degree of deflection of the curve and the use of a wrench is necessary during assembly. Small growth defects can occur in the wood. Necessity of pre-drilling holes for screws. Wood that is exposed to outdoor climatic influences changes in volume, dries out or swells according to climate change. Naturally, wood can have differences in width, due to the different expansion between the radial and tangential wood structure, during moisture compensation. Furthermore, cracks can occur in the wood, also cracks, especially at the ends of the boards due to drying, changing depending on the relative humidity or changes in climatic conditions, the occurrence of small holes after wood-destroying insects. In addition, troughing and twisting can occur with wood.

Knots and other natural features of wood

Knots and eyes, healthy or partially fused, cracks around the knots, marrow run-in, resin channels, marbling and other natural features are an integral part of the wood. Although tropical trees in particular tend to have a low number of knots, their number and the occurrence of the above traits are allowed.

Wood storage

Before and during installation make sure that wood is not exposed to direct sunlight, rain, snow or other weather conditions. Keep wood covered under the foil or store it under the roof with relative humidity similar to outdoor conditions. Place the wood on stickers to allow air ventilation and keep wood out of moist and mold formation. Follow these storage instructions to prevent wood against twisting, bowing or other deformations which may apear during incorrect storage.

Care and maintenance

Clean your deck regulary, keep it out of dirt, soil, sediments and pollen. This prevents the penetration of dirt macropores into the wood. The black dirt stains can occure under objects like umbrellas stands, flower pots, bowls, mats and other where water and hight moisture can stand without proper air ventilation. Therefore carry these objects time to time and ensure natural drying and ventilation. This helps to avoid creating of dark spots on the wood.
