About Jatoba

Jatoba, botanically known as Hymenaea, is a very hard South American tree with high resistance. Jatoba provides good stability and good physical and mechanical properties. It is a globally popular wood that, due to its high resistance and hardness, is often used for a wide variety of exterior applications, such as patios, industrial floors, outdoor furniture, facade cladding and more. Because of its beautiful pattern, jatoba is also a popular wood for interior joinery.

Colour and weathering

The color of jatoba is initially red with various shades with a distinct structure of annual rings. Color differences between individual pieces of decking are natural and usual. Over time, due to exposure to weather and UV radiation, it weathers and changes color to a gray shade, and due to moisture, then to a dark shade. The weathering time of wood depends on the treatment method, location, climate, exposure of individual pieces to rain and other weather influences.

Features

Low degree of volume changes in wood, low degree of curvature, small growth defects. Possibility of cracks due to climate. It is recommended to re-sand the surface after installation. The necessity of pre-drilling holes for screws to prevent splitting and the formation of cracks. Wood that is exposed to outdoor climatic influences changes its volume, dries out, or grows according to climate changes. There may be slight differences in the width of individual planks, due to the different expansion of the wood during moisture equalization between the radial and tangential growth of the wood. In wood that is exposed to outdoor climatic influences, there may be cracks, deflection of the so-called troughing, twisting, cracks and fissures, especially at the ends of the planks due to drying, changing depending on the relative humidity of the air or changes in climatic conditions, small holes from wood-destroying insects. If you want to restore the original color of the wood, use Saicos professional degreasing product and proceed according to the technical sheet. Then treat with a suitable protective oil coating.

Natural oils contend

Most tropical woods contain a natural dye that can leach out of the wood over a period of time, for example due to rain, in the form of a dark liquid. Dye leaching occurs to a small extent with this wood, avoid contact with plasters, bricks and other coverings or places that could be stained. Ensure drainage of rainwater with a pipe system or sewer. Use only high-strength stainless steel screws for assembly. Avoid contact of the wood with iron objects that create blue-black stains on the wood, as well as substances and objects that cause corrosion.

Wood storage

Before and during installation make sure that wood is not exposed to direct sunlight, rain, snow or other weather conditions. Keep wood covered under the foil or store it under the roof with relative humidity similar to outdoor conditions. Place the wood on stickers to allow air ventilation and keep wood out of moist and mold formation. Follow these storage instructions to prevent wood against twisting, bowing or other deformations which may apear during incorrect storage.

Care and maintenance

Clean your deck regulary, keep it out of dirt, soil, sediments and pollen. This prevents the penetration of dirt macropores into the wood. The black dirt stains can occure under objects like umbrellas stands, flower pots, bowls, mats and other where water and hight moisture can stand without proper air ventilation. Therefore carry these objects time to time and ensure natural drying and ventilation. This helps to avoid creating of dark spots on the wood.
