About the American walnut

American walnut, also called black walnut, botanical name Juglans nigra, is one of the most valuable deciduous trees in the world. American walnut wood is valued and loved for its highly decorative beauty, from the straight radial structure to the tangential pyramidal structure of the rings, which is especially valued in the decorative joinery segment as a designer paneling. American walnut is darker in color than European walnut. Heartwood can range from light brown to dark chocolate brown with darker brown streaks. The color can sometimes have a gray, purple or reddish tint. Sapwood is light yellow-gray to almost white. The wood structure is very decorative, from straight radial to wavy tangential. American walnut wood shows moderate resistance to wood decay fungi. On average, the trees grow to a height of 30-37 m with a dry wood density of approx. 660 Kg/m3, which ensures very good workability. Gluing of American walnut is good and the wood accepts coatings also well, although it is rarely stained. Responds well to steam bending. The homeland of American walnut is North America. It grows mostly in coastal zones, from southern Ontario, west to southeast South Dakota, south to Georgia, northern Florida, and southwest to central Texas.
